Discover moreWhilst the elections proceeded relatively peacefully, supporters of former General Buhari’s CPC are refusing to respect the victory of the PDP candidate, incumbent president Goodluck Jonathan, and violence has erupted throughout the North.
On 6 April the Nigeria Muslim Council issued a 7-day ultimatum to all non-Muslims in the North to leave the region or face the consequences. On 7 April there were two bomb blasts in Kaduna.
Soon after the Presidential Election on 16 April, Stefanos received a call from the Shira Yana Local Government Area of Bauchi State with reports of threats from Muslims. All Christians were reported to be taking refuge at police barracks.
The following day, even before the result could be announced, violence erupted in most parts of the North, targeting Christians, their churches, homes and businesses, and supporters of the PDP. On 18 April hundreds of Christians were reported killed and some hiding in barracks.
This comes at a time when Stefanos has exhausted its relief funds on behalf of victims of the recent sectarian crises in Jos. Christians are in desperate need of support. Please support them.
